PTV VISSIM Calibration Basics: A Practical Starting Point

Understand the purpose of calibration and the practical checks that make a VISSIM model more credible for traffic simulation studies.

What calibration means in a microsimulation model

Calibration is the process of adjusting model parameters so simulated behaviour is reasonably consistent with observed traffic conditions. It is different from simply making a model look visually realistic.

Start with observed conditions

Useful observations can include traffic volumes, turning movements, queues, travel times, speeds and lane usage. The data should represent the conditions and time period the model is intended to reproduce.

Change parameters systematically

Adjust a limited set of behavioural or operational parameters at a time, document each run and compare outputs against field observations. A reproducible calibration log is often more valuable than an unexplained set of final parameters.

Validate separately

After calibration, test the model against a separate set of observations where possible. This helps identify models that fit one dataset but do not generalise to other conditions.
